The table of contents is how a reader moves through a book — and how a reading system builds its navigation menu. In an EPUB it lives in the navigation document (and, for older files, the NCX). Origami reads it into a clean, editable outline: rename entries, re-order and re-nest them, fix links that point to the wrong place, and save it straight back into the file.
When a book has no table of contents at all, Origami builds one for you: it reads the reading order and the headings inside each chapter and proposes a structured outline whose every link points at a real place in the book. You review and adjust it, then write it in — the original file is never overwritten, you get a new corrected version to download.

Questions about the table of contents
- Where does the table of contents live in an EPUB?
- In the navigation document (a
navwithepub:type="toc") in EPUB 3, and in the NCX (toc.ncx) in EPUB 2. Origami reads either and can write both. - Does this work with PDFs?
- Yes — Origami reads a PDF’s outline (its bookmarks) and can generate one with AI when the PDF has none. Editing a PDF’s outline back into the file isn’t supported yet, so for PDFs the table of contents is view-only.
- What if my book has no table of contents?
- AI builds one from the book’s reading order and headings. Every entry links to a real document or heading in the file, and you review it before it is saved.
- Does editing the table of contents change my book’s text?
- No. Only the navigation entries change; the chapters’ reading text is never touched, and the original file is preserved as a new corrected version is produced.
- Is editing free?
- Yes. Reading, editing and even AI generation of the table of contents are included in your plan — the plan limit is how many new publications you add each month, not how often you use the tools.
- Is my content used to train AI?
- No. Origami’s AI providers do not use your content to train models — see our AI policy for the details.
