What Origami is

Origami is a web workshop for finished books. Upload an EPUB, a PDF, a manuscript or an audiobook and it validates the file, checks and repairs its accessibility, extracts and enriches metadata into ONIX for Books 3, converts formats, and drafts the copy a publication page needs. Every tool opens the actual file rather than reading a record about it somewhere else, which is why it finds what a metadata feed cannot see.

Who makes it

Origami is made by publica.la, the digital catalogue platform that publishers, libraries and bookstores use to sell and lend their titles online. Running other people's catalogues for years taught us exactly where a book breaks before it reaches a reader: a missing identifier, an EPUB that fails validation, a cover image with no description, a blurb that never made it out of a spreadsheet. Origami is the repair bench we built for ourselves, opened up as a product.

Accessibility is the deadline

The European Accessibility Act requires ebooks sold in the EU to be accessible, and the requirement lands on the file itself: navigation, reading order, image descriptions, and declared language and accessibility metadata. Origami checks a book against EPUB Accessibility 1.1 and WCAG 2.1, explains each failure in plain language rather than as a raw error code, and proposes repairs you review and approve before anything is written back into the file.

Canonical tools, not our own opinion

Validation runs epubcheck and accessibility runs Ace by DAISY — the reference implementations the industry already agrees on — so a verdict from Origami is the verdict a distributor, an aggregator or a library system will reach on the same file. What we add is the part those tools leave to you: findings ranked by what actually blocks a sale, an explanation of each one, and a repair applied to the book instead of a task added to your list.

How we work

The file is the source

Every result comes from opening the book, never from a record about it.

Standard verdicts

epubcheck and Ace by DAISY decide what is valid. We never invent a score that disagrees with them.

Nothing runs behind your back

AI tools are opt-in and run only when you start them, and your content is never used to train a model.

You approve the repair

A proposed fix is shown before and after, and the improved file is a new version — the original is never overwritten.
